Bakewell

Bakewell

Bakewell is a small town believed to have been founded in Anglo Saxon times. It's name derives from the term 'Badeca's Well'. The town grew vastly by Norman times and was mentioned in the Doomsday book.

Bakewell Pudding

The recipe for a Bakewell Pudding consists of a puff pastry shell with a layer of jam. This is then covered with a filling of eggs, sugar, butter and almonds. Although the pudding can be traced back the medieval times, the traditional story of it's creation is purely by accident. In the 1860s a nobleman visiting the White Horse Inn in Bakewell ordered strawberry tart. In a muddle, the chef spread the egg mixture on top of the tart instead of mixing it into the cake, therefore creating the Bakewell Pudding. Over the years, the terms Bakewell Tart and Bakewell Pudding have become interchangable, although there are slight differences. Just be careful what you order when in in the town of Bakewell!
